FUN FACTS about Arabian Horses that you could weave into your colorful stories during playtime:

The Arabian horse is one of the most popular horse breeds and so famous for its beauty and stamina that it is even well known to non-horse people. They are very popular among equestrians because of their incredible athleticism, superior intellect, affectionate nature, and willingness to please. Show jumping, dressage, pleasure classes, trail, ranch riding, and reining are just a few of the sports that Arabian horses excel in but they are well known for their dominance in the show ring. They are quick learners, high-spirited and alert.

Arabians were once given the nickname the “Drinkers of the Wind.”  This nickname was due to their overall speed, strength, and endurance. During the later days of the Egyptian empire, these horses were often used to pull chariots. Sometimes they may have even been used for racing in addition to the benefits of having an Arabian around for transportation needs.

The Arabian breed is over 5,000 years old and is known as the oldest breed and the first domesticated breed of horse and is considered to be the foundation of all modern horse breeds. They were the horse of the Bedouin people (nomadic people) of Arabia as early as 3000 to 2500 BC and were later introduced into Europe and throughout the world. The Bedouins used them as war horses because they could travel far distances in harsh desert conditions due to their large lung capacity and incredible endurance.

Originating in the Middle East, the Arab people called them Keheilan, meaning ” pure blood, through and through”.  They are the purest of all horse breeds.

The physical characteristics of the Arabian breed include a dish face, large, wide-set eyes, broad forehead, small, curved ears, and large nostrils.

All Arabian horses have black skin underneath their coats, except underneath any white hair. When these horses lived in the desert, the black skin would help to protect them from the hot sun.

The skeleton of a pure Arabian is different from that of other horse breeds. An Arabian has 17 pairs of ribs, instead of 18 and 5 vertebrae instead of 6.

The average height of an Arabian is 14.1 to 15.1 hands (57 to 61 inches) tall and the average weight is 850 to 1,000 pounds.

The horse in the movie “The Black Stallion” was an Arabian stallion named Cass Ole.

Some think the Arabian is high spirited and wild. NOT TRUE In fact, the Arabian is an ideal family horse and versatile for any style of riding desired. They are intelligent, sensitive and courageous creatures. They are loyal if treated well and they will enjoy your attention.
